Annealing

Homogenization of metal, increased workability.
Pros
  • Increases metal workability
  • Cons
  • Decreases resistance of the material
  • Annealing consists in heating a metal to high temperatures followed by a slow cooling in ambient air or inside the furnace. This helps to homogenize the material and increases its workability, therefore metal resistance is decreased.

    Common usages

The goal of annealing is to achieve softer material to make it easier to work at ambient temperature, to obtain certain mechanical and physical properties, to totally or partially remove quenching & tempering effects.
